We shape our skirts because we need them to place our riggings, making them true and even on both sides of the tree, shape and trim our seats. By being shaped it improves the finished look of the saddle. The skirts are on and off the tree throughout the construction of the saddle. Having them shaped makes this process easier. By using firm blocking we are able to maintain this shape.
These techniques are used on all custom saddles. We learned how to apply this method to a variety of styles (trees) at one time.
